What to Expect at HairSocial
Choosing a hair salon in Northern Virginia is a decision most people make with very little information. Every salon website says it is passionate about hair, so the adjectives cancel each other out and you are left guessing. Rather than add to the pile of adjectives, this Q&A answers the practical questions people actually ask us before booking: who works on your hair, which products we use, what we are known for, and how we plan a service around your goals.
Decide for yourself whether it sounds like the right fit. If it does not, that is useful information too.
Q1: What kind of hair salon is HairSocial?
HairSocial is a full-service hair salon in Northern Virginia with two locations: inside Tysons Galleria on International Drive, and at Idylwood Plaza on Leesburg Pike in Falls Church. Both do cutting, color, smoothing treatments and styling, and both carry the same professional lines, including Kérastase, Shu Uemura and Wella Professionals.
Two things are worth knowing before you book. First, starting prices for every service are published on our salon services menu, so you can see the range before you sit down rather than after. Second, the consultation is complimentary and we would rather you use it. Color in particular depends on what is already on your hair, and a five-minute conversation is what separates a realistic plan from a disappointing one.
Q2: What happens with a complex color or a color correction?
This is where we would rather be straight with you than optimistic. Major color changes and corrections are chemistry, not decoration. Lifting dark, previously colored or box-dyed hair to a much lighter shade in one appointment is often possible in theory and a bad idea in practice, because the hair pays for it in condition.
So for those services we require a consultation and a strand test first, and we will tell you plainly if reaching your goal will take more than one visit. Some corrections do. We also will not tell you a lightening service leaves the hair untouched, because lifting color changes the hair’s structure by definition. What we can do is choose a formulation and a process that keeps that change as small as the result allows, and be honest about the trade-off before you commit. Resistant gray has its own quirks, which we cover in more detail in our guide to why covering gray hair is so difficult.
Q3: Why do the products a salon uses matter?
Professional lines matter less for the shampoo experience than for what happens over the following weeks. Color fades, the cuticle roughens, and cheap conditioning agents cover that up with silicone rather than addressing it. The lines we carry work on bond repair, cuticle sealing and moisture retention, which is the difference between color that still looks intentional after six weeks and color that turns brassy after three.
We use these products during your service and recommend a short at-home routine to match. We will also tell you when you do not need a product. Recommending a shelf of things you will not use is a good way to sell once and lose a client.
Q4: What do clients travel to HairSocial for?
Clients come to us from Falls Church, Vienna, McLean and Arlington, and four services account for most of that:
- Balayage and dimensional blonding: hand-painted, sun-kissed color with grow-out that stays wearable. We break down what it involves and what it costs in our guide to balayage pricing in Northern Virginia.
- Precision haircuts: shapes cut to your hair’s texture and growth pattern, from the Italian bob to long, softly layered styles.
- The Brazilian Blowout: a professional smoothing service that reduces frizz and cuts daily styling time. Our guide explains how the treatment works and who it suits.
- Signature blowouts: high-volume styling that holds for days rather than hours, explained in our blowout guide.
Q5: How do I choose the right salon for my hair goals?
Judge a salon on the consultation rather than the marketing. A stylist who asks what you have already put on your hair, how much time you will realistically spend styling it, and what you disliked about your last cut is building a plan. A stylist who agrees with everything you say is taking an order.
You should also expect to be told no occasionally. If a shade will not sit well against your regrowth, or a cut will fight your hair’s natural pattern every morning, that is worth hearing in the chair rather than discovering at home. At HairSocial we plan color and cuts around maintenance you will actually keep up, which usually means a service that grows out gracefully instead of one that needs rescuing in four weeks.
